iPhone slow? Maybe it’s the battery’s fault- MobiTechinfo

Some tests have shown that Apple limits performance on devices with deteriorated batteries. From Cupertino confirm and explain: serves to avoid the sudden shutdown of the smartphone

If your iPhone is slow, it takes more than usual to load applications and the interface is not as smooth as when you bought it, maybe the fault is the battery.

About a week ago, performance tests conducted by some users on iPhone 6, 6S and 7 with low-capacity batteries had seen a reduction in processor speed. Replacing the charging unit, however, everything returned to normal. User surveys have also been confirmed by GeekBench, a service that offers tools for this type of test and collects data on the performance of tens of thousands of devices. Changes in performance started to appear in the tests after two updates of the operating system, iOS 10.2.1 and iOS 11.2.0, to suggest that the limitations were deliberately imposed in the firmware by Apple.

The company confirmed the hypothesis with an official comment to The Verge. From Cupertino have explained that the choice to reduce the performance on phones with worn batteries is related to the solution of the sudden shutdown bug that affects some models of the iPhone.

“The ability of lithium batteries to provide peak current decreases when it is cold when the battery is almost empty, or with the age of the component. The result is that the phone can suddenly turn off to protect the components, “explained an Apple spokesperson. “Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, 6S and SE to reduce instantaneous peaks to the cases that are strictly necessary to prevent the shutdown problem. We have extended this functionality to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and we plan to extend it to other devices in the future. ”

It is an engineering compromise that is more than understandable: instead of risking that the phones go out suddenly, perhaps when a user may need it most, Apple reduces its overall performance but ensures the uninterrupted operation of the device.

However, this “functionality” has never been communicated to the user in a transparent manner. Who uses an iPhone, in other words, has no way of understanding by itself that to overcome the deterioration of the performance of the device is enough to change the battery, a much cheaper operation of replacing the device in favor of a newer model and more performing. A lack of communication that will inevitably reignite the critical criticism of the planned obsolescence of the Cupertino devices.

To check the condition of the battery and processor of your iPhone you can use an application such as CpuDasherX or GeekBench 4 (paid). With the first one you can quickly check the clock speed of the processor of your iPhone and compare it with the official specifications; with the second you can instead conduct tests on the most detailed performances.

Finally, if you have an iPhone 6s, check if it belongs to the models for which Apple offers free battery replacement under the “Program for unexpected shutdown problems” by entering the serial number of your smartphone on this page of the official website.
