Hurricane Maria: Google uses balloons to operate Puerto Rico networks

With the Hurricane Maria, which hit the US territory, the cellular infrastructure of Puerto Rico was very badly damaged. In this context, the FCC said that 83% of the cell phones have been reduced, forcing the US companies to use reserve roads in an attempt to operate their networks

To receive permission from the FCC to use its large project called the balloon project, which will work on cellular coverage in emergency situations.

For the first time, this project was used or launched four years ago by using it over the sky of New Zealand. These balloons are equipped with technology that allows them to provide cellular service to remote areas, to be the same steps taken by the company but in the territory of another country.

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, “Ajit Bay,” announced the establishment of task forces concerned to focus on the reconstruction of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. “This includes rebuilding the telecommunications infrastructure and restoring telecommunications services,” he said.
